You want to live that vegan lifestyle, but let’s be honest – a lot of times, the options aren’t great. Recipes can be bland and boring with no life or character. That’s why it’s SO sweet (in this case, literally!) when you find those little gems that knock your socks off. Bloom Cookie on 124th Street in Edmonton is just that – a little vegan gem! Bloom cookies are heavenly, soft and scrumptious vegan cookies. They’re nut, egg and dairy-free, and unbelievably good!
Meet your new best friend when you want a cookie fix without compromising your dietary plan:
Bloom takes its commitment to providing vegan products very seriously. They don’t use artificial vanilla extract or red dyes (sometimes made from animal by-products). You’re in good hands! Commonly-asked dietary questions are answered here.
Chocolate chip, London Fog and Gingersnap are always in regular rotation at Bloom, along with fun new flavours for when you want to try something new.
Local mom Ashley Benson started Bloom Cookie in 2011. I had a chance to ask her a few questions about how it all got started.
When did you start Bloom Cookie co?
I started Bloom about six months after our daughter was born in 2011. I had been making cookies and other desserts for friends and family who were vegan or had allergies. At the time, my husband Andrew was involved with the Royal Bison Craft fair, so I thought I would apply for that and see if there was an interest in the cookies. They were a hit. Soon after I applied for Farmer’s Markets and started selling there.
What inspired you to start Bloom Cookie Co?
I wanted to be able to stay home with our daughter, but our family still needed a second income. I knew there was a gap for vegan/allergy-friendly treats in Edmonton, so I figured I would give this a shot.
Describe your typical day or week at Bloom
We’ve have made a lot of changes in the last year since opening our storefront. We also found out that I was pregnant with our second a few weeks after signing the lease. He was born in March, which has obviously made running this new endeavor a bit more challenging. We start each week by mixing, baking and packaging our wholesale orders for cafes throughout the city. We then get the dough and cookies ready for the shop as well as any orders we may have for the week.
Thankfully, I have been able to hire a few amazing ladies at the shop to keep everything going when I’m not around. I’m able to stay home a couple of days a week with our almost-one-year-old (who is very busy!), answering emails and running errands for the shop. Then he comes with me to work and hangs out while I make cookies and help customers at the front of the house. Often times you may come in to get cookies and I’ll have a baby strapped to my back.
Anything else you want people to know?
We are a small, family-run cookie shop that focuses on inclusive products available to everyone. Our cookies are mixed in small batches and hand scoop all of our cookies (even the thousands each week for wholesale). We do our best to provide cookies that are as inclusive as possible without sacrificing flavor. We are always developing new flavors to offer our customers even those are a bit tricky to make vegan. Try our top classics like Chocolate chip, London Fog and Gingersnap in stock every week and a rotation of flavors so you can always come and try something new!
