I love getting older. Life is made richer with meaningful relationships, quality experiences, and the confidence that comes with growing into who you are truly meant to be.
That said, as I edge closer to 40, I’ve noticed it’s not as easy to maintain that certain glow. My skin is not as forgiving as it used to be when it comes to overindulging, lack of sleep, not drinking enough water, sleeping with my makeup on, etc. Two years ago, I decided to buckle down and really start taking care of myself (although, I’m still horrible at taking my makeup off at night!).
I believe the best way to invest in healthy skin is eating healthy, limiting coffee and booze, drinking lots of water, getting lots of sleep, and pursuing general happiness. This is a simple, inexpensive approach. If you want to take it a step further, there are options that don’t require you to borrow from your kid’s college fund to make it happen. Keep reading!
What I’ve Had Done
I knew right away in my initial chat with Justine Martinson, owner of Lipstick Empire, that I was in good hands. She knows her stuff, and she’s really good at creating realistic, achievable, budget-aware plans for her clients. I let Justine take the lead, trusted her recommendations, and it’s working out beautifully. Here’s what I’ve had done:
- Micro-needling: three treatments over four months; planning for on-going maintenance a couple of times a year.
- Sublime: three treatments over three months; planning for on-going occasional maintenance.
- Microdermabrasion: a few times a year.
- Glo Facial: every few months.
There’s a significant difference in my skin after these treatments. The most noticeable is tone and texture. My skin feels so supple and smooth, and my complexion is much more balanced. I looked at a photo of myself from about two years ago (right before I began these treatments), and I feel like I look ten years younger now than I did then.

Seasonal facials: Microdermabrasion or Glo Facials every four months (approx. $150-200 each).
At-home care: Three-step process. Cleanse, tone, moisturize (approx. $100 for a four-month supply).
Total investment: $700 – $900 annually (approx. $60-80 per month).
Mid-Range
Monthly facials: Glo Facials, Microderm, and chemical peels (approx. $125-200 each).
At-home care: Three-step process: cleanse, tone, and moisturize while incorporating serums (approx. $150-200 for a four-month supply).
Total investment: $1,950 – $3,000 annually (approx. $250 per month).
Premium Budget
Monthly treatments: Glo Facials, Microderm, and chemical peels (approx. $125-200 each). Adding in a series of sublime, micro-needling or sublative (series packaging ranges from $750-1200 for three treatments).
At-home care: Three-step process: cleanse, tone, and moisturize while incorporating serums, masks, exfoliant, and eye cream (approx. $400 for a 4-6 month supply).
Total investment: Approx. $3,000+ per year. (Minimum $250 per month.)
