Flavoured with orange juice and orange zest, with the warmth of nutmeg and cinnamon.
Chef Alexei’s Cranberry Sauce is a cinch to make!
The taste of orange combined with warm spices makes this cranberry sauce so Christmasy! You can use it to top up your turkey, mix it in with everything as you build a perfect bite…and it will taste amazing combined with mayo for your week-after-Christmas turkey sandwiches!
Chef Alexei + Freson Bros.
This recipe comes straight from Chef Alexei (Top Chef Canada) of Freson Bros. (Remember the incredible Caramelized Brussel Sprouts with Bacon recipe he shared with us for Thanksgiving?) Freson Bros. is opening its first Edmonton location in Rabbit Hill in March 2021. For now, we shop at their newest (and absolutely stunning) store in Fort Saskatchewan and often pop out to their Stony Plain location as well. They also have a dozen other stores in communities across Alberta.

Here’s the how-to for Chef Alexei’s Cranberry Sauce:
You’ll Need:
- Two bags (650g) of fresh cranberries
- One cup granulated sugar
- One cinnamon stick
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- One large navel orange (juice and zest)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange juice and zest.
- Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer, stirring often so that the bottom doesn’t stick.
- Continue to simmer for 10-15 minutes until cranberries break down and sauce begins to thicken.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper, adding a little more sugar if you prefer a sweeter sauce.
- Remove from heat and store in a heatproof container.
