Sourdough grilled cheese is the only way to go!
A delicious twist on your traditional grilled cheese sandwich.
There’s nothing quite like the comfort of a grilled cheese sandwich, right?! I don’t know about you but the taste is nostalgic for me. Those snowy days growing up in Manitoba, dipping my grilled cheese into a bowl of tomato soup – so delicious! Chicken soup is also a fabulous option (try my Best Damn Chicken Noodle soup recipe here).
My friends at Freson Bros. (take a tour of Canada’s coolest grocery store here) make a mean grilled cheese. Unconventional and divine. This recipe is my attempted recreation of theirs, along with some key tips that will change your grilled cheese game for good!
You’ll Need
- butter, room temperature
- tons of grated Gouda, Cheddar, and Grana Padano
- sourdough bread, sliced
- non-stick frying pan
- spatula
- box grater
Directions
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Use the large holes on your box grater to grate all of your cheese.
- Combine all three kinds of cheese in a bowl.
- Cover one of the non-buttered sides of bread with your mound of cheese and top with the other slice (butter side out).
- Pre-heat your pan for a couple of minutes on medium-low and then place your sandwich in the centre of your pan.
- Cover your pan to ensure your bread and cheese are melting at the same rate.
- About two minutes later check to see if the bread on the bottom is golden brown. When it is, flip your sandwich and press down with a spatula.
- Fry for another minute or two (until the bottom is golden brown).
Perfect Grilled Cheese Tips
The two key tips for making a great grilled cheese is to make sure your pan isn’t too hot that your bread burns and to cover your pan when cooking to allow for an even distribution of heat. See more tips for how to master the perfect grilled cheese here!
